Service Description
Dates: 4th October 10am-4pm 11th October: 10am-4pm A two-day intensive for improvers who want to take their wheel throwing to the next level. Already comfortable centring clay and throwing simple forms, but want to feel more confident, controlled and consistent at the wheel? This focused two-day course is designed to help you refine your throwing and trimming skills, understand how the two processes work together, and learn how to approach your pots with greater intention. We’ll look at how good throwing sets you up for successful trimming, helping you create better proportions, cleaner forms and more refined finished pieces. During the intensive, you’ll learn how to: - Refine your throwing and trimming techniques - Identify and troubleshoot common problems when throwing and trimming - Understand how your throwing decisions affect the trimming process - Plan and throw your forms with trimming in mind - Develop greater control, confidence and consistency at the wheel - Refine the shape and proportions of your pots through effective trimming Day 1 – Throwing We’ll focus on throwing a selection of forms, looking at technique, proportions and how to make intentional decisions while you work. You’ll learn to consider the finished shape from the beginning, rather than treating trimming as an afterthought. Day 2 – Trimming You’ll return to the pieces you made on Day 1 and learn how to trim them effectively. We’ll explore how trimming can refine the shape, improve proportions, create a more balanced foot and give your pots a polished finish. This course is suitable for improvers and intermediate wheel throwers who already have some experience on the wheel and want to develop their skills further. You should be comfortable with: - Centring clay independently - Opening and pulling up the walls - Throwing simple forms on the wheel This is not a beginners' course, so some previous wheel-throwing experience is essential. You’ll be able to choose three favourite pieces from the course for us to glaze and fire. There will be a maximum size and weight for pieces included in the course. If you would like to keep and have additional pieces glazed and fired, this can be arranged for an additional charge. Glazing will be done by us, and finished pieces will be ready for collection within 4-5 weeks. Limited to just 6 wheels, keeping the group small and allowing plenty of individual guidance and hands-on tuition.
