Service Description

Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese pottery technique characterized by carving or hollowing out a solid block of clay to create various forms, such as bowls, cups, or teapots. Unlike other pottery methods that use a potter’s wheel or molds, kurinuki emphasizes a more spontaneous and organic process, resulting in unique and often asymmetrical pieces. Students will be taught how to make 1 lidded box during this workshop. Examples are shown in the images of this course. The primary technique involves hand-carving the clay. Potters start with a solid block and gradually remove material to shape the interior and exterior. The carving process leaves behind distinct tool marks and textures, contributing to the aesthetic and tactile qualities of the finished piece. The forms are often rustic and irregular, embracing the natural qualities of the clay. This technique celebrates the beauty of imperfection and the intimate connection between the artist and their medium, making each piece a distinctive work of art. 15 minutes before the lesson finishes will be spent cleaning your work area and tools. Your piece will be glazed in my emerald green glaze as it looks beautiful on a carved surface!. After your lesson, your work will be glazed and fired which may take up 4-5 weeks to complete. Having a maximum of 6 students in the class is a great way to ensure that each participant receives plenty of guidance and attention from the teacher. This allows for a more personalised and hands-on learning experience, which is especially helpful for beginners or those who wish to review pottery techniques. All pieces will go through 2 firings reaching up to 1250 degrees. Finished pieces can be collected up to 4 weeks after your 4th session. PRICE INCLUDES The price of this lesson includes pre-lesson preparation, tuition, the clay you use and glazes, two separate firings and the additional time it takes to finish your pots (glazing). We will need at least 3 people booked onto this class for it to go ahead. Please press 'Book Now' below and click 20th August on the calendar to book.
